Complete Exterior Remodel in Elmhurst: A Multi-Phase Home Transformation

At Great American Exteriors, many of our most successful projects are completed in carefully planned phases that allow homeowners to improve their homes over time while maintaining a cohesive design. This Elmhurst remodeling project is a perfect example of how strategic exterior upgrades can completely transform a home’s appearance, functionality, and value.

Step 1: Installing a New Asphalt Shingle Roof

The first phase of this exterior renovation focused on protecting the home from the top down. The existing roof was removed and replaced with a new asphalt shingle roofing system designed to provide long-lasting durability, weather protection, and improved curb appeal.

A new roof is often one of the most important investments homeowners can make, as it serves as the first line of defense against the harsh Midwest weather. The updated roofing system immediately refreshed the home’s appearance while providing peace of mind for years to come.

Step 2: Removing the Existing Front Vestibule

With the roofing work completed, attention turned to the home’s front entry. The existing vestibule had become dated and no longer complemented the vision the homeowners had for their property.

Our team carefully removed the old structure to create a clean slate for a completely redesigned entrance. This step opened the door for a more welcoming and architecturally appealing front facade.

Step 3: Building a New Front Entry System

Once the existing vestibule was removed, construction began on a brand-new entryway. This phase included the installation of new decking, stairs, and railings designed to improve both accessibility and appearance.

The centerpiece of the new entry is a custom-built portico that adds architectural interest and creates a grander entrance to the home. To further enhance the design, a striking black metal accent roof was incorporated into the portico, creating a beautiful contrast against the home’s lighter exterior colors.

Step 4: Installing a New Front Door

After the new entry structure was completed, we installed a new front door to serve as a focal point for the home’s facade.

The updated entry door not only improved security and energy efficiency but also helped tie together the overall design of the exterior renovation. Combined with the new portico and railings, the front door creates a welcoming first impression for guests and visitors.

Step 5: Upgrading the Exterior with James Hardie Siding

The final phase of the project involved updating the home’s exterior cladding. The existing siding was removed and replaced with beautiful James Hardie® fiber cement siding in Pearl Gray.

James Hardie siding is known for its exceptional durability, low maintenance requirements, and ability to withstand the changing seasons of the Chicago area. The Pearl Gray color provides a timeless appearance that complements the home’s traditional architecture while giving it a fresh, modern feel.

Step 6: Finishing Touches with New Shutters

To complete the transformation, new vinyl shutters were installed throughout the home. These finishing details help frame the windows, add contrast to the facade, and enhance the overall architectural character of the property.

While seemingly small, details like shutters often play a major role in creating a polished and cohesive exterior design.

The Finished Result

The completed project dramatically transformed the appearance of this Elmhurst home. By combining a new roof, custom portico, upgraded entryway, new front door, James Hardie siding, and updated shutters, the homeowners achieved a fresh, timeless exterior that feels both modern and true to the character of the neighborhood.

This multi-phase renovation demonstrates how thoughtful exterior improvements can work together to increase curb appeal, improve functionality, and add long-term value to a home while preserving the classic charm that makes Elmhurst such a desirable community.
